The Financial Secretary, John Tsang, has reiterated the importance of preserving jobs during the economic downturn. Speaking on RTHK's Hong Kong Letter he said this had been one of the main highlights in Wednesday's Budget. Mr Tsang said he met people from different backgrounds in the community and listened to their recommendations while drafting his Budget report. He vowed to spend government resources wisely and said he believed people in Hong Kong could overcome the challenges facing them in the current global financial crisis, as long as they had confidence in the future. In the Budget Mr Tsang pledged to increase government spending to create 62,000 jobs and internships over the next three years. He said he would spend more than $1.6 billion in the coming fiscal year to sustain and protect the job market from the economic downturn.
